Deep, slow, and not going anywhere.

Tiers of pointed petals layered into a full bloom, each outer petal tipped with a small violet stone, the center textured like the flower itself. Dense and compact — it sits high on the hand but keeps a close footprint.

Dahlias grow from tubers. You plant them and for a long stretch nothing visible happens at all, and the urge to dig them up and check is considerable. What is happening underground in that period is the entire reason they return larger the following year.

This is the ring for the stage almost nobody discusses, because there is no story in it. Nothing is on fire. Nobody is calling to see whether she is all right. She is simply there, doing ordinary competent things, deciding quietly what she actually wants — and wondering whether standing still counts as progress.
