The Shell

The lining, not the jewel.

A wide flat baroque pearl, held at four points in gold-plated claws, laid across the finger like a piece of the shell it came out of. Softly iridescent rather than bright — it shifts through cream, pink and grey depending on the light.

Nacre is the material a mollusk uses to line its own house. It isn't decorative in origin; it's a repair, laid down in sheets over anything sharp that got inside, until the sharp thing is smooth enough to live with.

That is a better description of rebuilding than most of the things written about it. You do not remove what got in. You coat it, patiently, until it stops cutting.

Care

Last on, first off, and more carefully than the rest of the range. Pearl is the one material here that was alive: keep it away from soap, perfume and water, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth. It will outlast you if you do.
